Durban-Chicago: Ernest Dawkins and New Horizons, featuring Zim Ngqawana and Louis Moholo, plus the Mandingo Griot Society
Chicago and Durban's mutual influence of urban rhythms are apparent in the bands of both Chicago saxophonist Ernest Dawkins (pictured with New Horizons) and South African reedist Zim Ngqawana. The two met in Chicago in 1999 and Dawkins' subsequent travels to South Africa led to collaborations with Zim Ngqawana's ensemble. This concert will premiere new compositions as well as feature legendary South African drummer Louis Moholo, who is founder of the Dedication Orchestra. The concert opens with a reunion of Foday Musa Suso's Mandingo Griot Society featuring Chicagoans Hamid Drake, Adam Rudolph and Joe Thomas.
